Greg's Wish for the New Year

Posted on Dec 27th, 2007 by GregBe : Paradigm Shifter GregBe
Buddhatemple
I just wanted to wish all of my newfound friends in the Zaadz community a peaceful, prosperous, joyous, and fulfilling New Year! Talk to you all soon... PS- the above pic is from the Byodo-In Temple, an exact replica of a 900-year old Japanese Temple, which is located in northern Oahu, Hawaii. I hope to have many more Hawaii trip pics posted soon.

Accidental pic of the year!

As anyone who enjoys photography can attest, you can try so hard to capture the perfect shot, the perfect light, the perfect situation. And then something amazingly unexpected materializes right before your eyes! Like the shot above. One of my favorite spots here in San Diego is the Gliderport in La Jolla, where on a windy day, dozens of gliders, parasails, model airplanes and other craft take flight by literally jumping off the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. There's a little cafe there and you can sit and watch the activity for free. We were there the day after Thanksgiving when I accidentally caught the above scene on memory card. Syncronisity indeed!

“The new frontier is not about a country or a planet. It is mind.”

The above quote is taken from the amazing phenomenon that is the movie (and now several companion books and DVDs) What the BLEEP Do We Know!? Blending quantum physics theory and neuroscience with quotes from spiritual teachings, the basic premise of this incredibly thought-provoking and mind-bending film is that science and religion are essentially just two sides of the same coin- both of which help to explain the universe and our place in it.

Only when they work together can we begin to adequately answer some of the great questions that have taunted mankind through the years. The filmmakers contend, and I agree, that in order to evolve as individuals and as a species, we MUST ask those great questions.

Great questions like: What is reality? Why are we here? Where are we going? Are we all connected in some way and if so, how? Who am I? What is the soul? What is “God”?

Over the past few years, I’ve discovered or been pointed towards quite a few websites, books, authors, and movies that tackle those types of questions. By including these on my site, I’m not necessarily endorsing their content or the ideas they propose, but hope that they stimulate lively thought and discussion.

Links To Check Out:

What The BLEEP Do We Know!?

The companion website to the movie, DVD, and books of the same name; see above.

Eckhart Tolle
Reading Tolle’s “Power of Now” changed everything for me. One of the great masters!

The Global Intelligencer
My favorite online newsletter (and most useful for me)! Published by a jouralist who worked on What The Bleep, its mission is to serve as an information clearinghouse for topics concerning individual, social, and global transformation. Learn more about various individuals forging new and sustainable methodologies in science, economics, health, social services, alternative energy, education, agriculture, business, and the arts.

Zencast
A weekly podcast of inspiring Buddhist Dharma talks; available on iTunes.

The Great Rethinking
An organization dedicated to “the the successful cultivation of a sustainable and workable world.” They sponsor conferences with progressive thinkers, authors, and speakers on topics ranging from frontier science and shamanism to orbs.

Lost
One of my two all-time favorite television shows and arguably the smartest show ever on network television. Lost is FAR more than a show about the survivors of a plane crash on an island with mysterious happenings; its brilliant, dense mythology is essentially a meditation on two key issues — freedom vs. determinism and naturalism vs. supernaturalism.

Dr. Masaru Emoto
Also featured in BLEEP, Dr, Emoto’s photographs of water crystals and the effects of music and intention on those crystals are a true breakthrough and incredibly powerful.

Friends of Washoe
Companion website to one of my favorite books of all-time, “Next of Kin,” which chronicles the life of the chimp Washoe, the first non-human to acquire a human language!

Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight
Another phenomenal book about the realities of our current situation: dependence on dwindling oil and clean-water supplies, destruction of forests and plant/animal species, unsustainable population growth, frequent wars, third-world and first-world impoverishment, etc; it also explains why, fundamentally, human civilization has gotten us into this mess. Everyone who cares about the earth and the fate of humanity should read this book.

Hubble Telescope Images
The most amazing real images you've ever seen! Taken over a 17+ year period, the images from the Hubble Space Telescope are incredibly beautiful, surreal, and bizarre.

VW Vagabonds
A fun book about two fellow San Diegans who quit their day jobs and spent three years crossing the entire Western Hemisphere and later Africa in an old VW Camper!

Way of the Peaceful Warrior / Dan Millman
Another great book, recently made into a movie, about discovering your true life purpose; it’s the semi-autobiographical story of Dan Millman, star gymnast at Cal in the 1960’s and his mentor “Socrates.”

Francis Dunnery
A student of Jungian psychology and metaphysics, FXD is one of my favorite artists and an amazing songwriter and guitarist; his “Man” is my favorite CDs of the past few years.

Gary Zukov
Award-winning physicist and author, his “Seat of the Soul” was another great read for me.

“The Fountain” (the Movie)
A science fiction / fantasy film by maverick director Darren Aronofsky that follows three interwoven narratives which take place in the age of conquistadors, the modern day period, and the far future. In mind-bending visual stye and a complex, time-defying narrative, it explores the themes of love and mortality, drawing influences from Mayan mythology. Dense, trippy, and brilliant!

The Celestine Prophecy / James Redfield
The best-selling book, also recently made into a movie, James Redfield’s “adventure in pursuit of a spiritual mystery" was one of the first of its kind and is still a classic.

Fred Alan Wolf (“Dr. Quantum”)
Physicist, writer, and one of the “stars” of What the BLEEP, Wolf is known for his insightful and sometimes humorous explorations of quantum physics and consciousness.

Institute of Noetic Sciences

Founded by former NASA astronaut Edgar Mitchell, the institute conducts and sponsors leading-edge scientific research into the potential and power of consciousness.

What Is Enlightenment?
The online home of What is Enlightenment? magazine, devoted to “redefining spirituality for an evolving world.” WEI is committed to bringing a new perspective to politics, business, science, the arts, and the environment.

Fast Food Nation
A book by investigative journalist Eric Schlosser that examines the local and global influence of the fast food industry in the US. Informative, funny, and depressing all at once!

Club of Budapest / Dr. Ervin Laszlo
Dr. Laszlo is a Hungarian philosopher of science, systems theorist, integral theorist, and classical pianist. I’m currently reading his book, “Science and the Akashic Field: An Integral Theory of Everything.” Laszlo founded the Club of Budapest International, an “independent organization of like-minded persons who wish to come together in the interest of working toward a better future for all.”

Living the Field / The Intention Experiment
Lynne McTaggart, an internationally recognized spokesperson on the science of spirituality and consciousness research, is conducting a series of web-based experiments testing an “outrageous” premise: that human thoughts and intention can affect physical reality.

Thich Nhat Hanh
Vietnamese Buddhist monk, poet, scholar, author, and peace activist.

The Dali Lama
Hopefully he needs no explanation!

Vision Magazine

A great San Diego-based monthly magazine dedicated to “providing tools for living in a more peaceful and sustainable world via evolutionary ideas about conscious living and holistic healing.”

Sacred Sites / Martin Gray Photography
Anthropologist and photographer Martin Gray has visited more then 1,000 “sacred sites” in 80 countries and many of his amazing photographs of these sites are online at this site.

Hearts of Space
The home of the legendary radio program, Music From The Hearts of Space. HOS grew out of former architect Stephen Hill's fascination with space-creating, ambient and contemplative music. Now in its 24th year of national syndication, a one hour program airs weekly on about 220 NPR affiliate stations and an archive of more than 800 shows dating back to 1983 is available on the HOS website.

Spiritual Cinema Circle
A sort-of Netflix for spiritual cinema; for a monthly fee, you receive a new DVD every month with four movies that have been hand-selected for their vision and compassion. The Spiritual Cinema Circle originally grew out of collaboration between film producer Stephen Simon and psychologists Kathlyn and Gay Hendricks.

Dr. Joe Dispenza
The "create your day" guy from What the Bleep, Dr. Dispenza's new book is called "Evolve Your Brain: The Science of Changing Your Mind."
